Sophia (she/her) is extremely excited to be joining the Great Peninsula Conservancy Team as a Conservation Education Fellow AmeriCorps VISTA! She studied wildlife conservation and oceanography at the University of California, Davis. Sophia is looking forward to learning more about Pacific Northwest ecosystems and how this rich landscape can be valuable in conservation education. Join us in welcoming Sophia! |

This summer four new members joined GPC's board. Join us in welcoming one of them, Kelly Michaels! Kelly has lived in Kitsap County since 2004. She was president of a commercial real estate firm in Seattle for 16 years, then was recruited to join Kitsap Humane Society’s executive team as director of marketing. We all know Nate Daniel as GPC's Executive Director, so it shouldn't be a surprise that he and his wife Kim Daniel joined join GPC’s Legacy Society Challenge this year. They are passionate about the natural world and wanted to ensure that future generations have the same opportunities to enjoy nature. GPC is seeking qualified candidates for positions in our Community Engagement and Stewardship Teams:
Community Engagement Coordinator - Help GPC create education, outreach, and event opportunities that reflect our conservation values and commitment to connecting all people to nature. The Community Engagement Coordinator will support a wide variety of engagement-based projects under the umbrella of GPC’s conservation mission.
Stewardship Associate - Assist in the stewardship of GPC's conservation easements and fee-owned properties. The focus of this primarily field-based position is to ensure that all GPC properties are documented, monitored, and stewarded. |

| | | The conservation team has been busy ensuring that land and water across our region are protected forever. You might have heard about the Grovers Creek Expansion and the Tahuya River Preserve, but with both of them now officially GPC lands, we wanted to share a bit more about these two projects in the GPC blog (link below). Thanks to all the community partners and individuals who stepped up to make these two acquisitions happen! |
| | | | | Filucy Bay Restoration Begins |
| | Thanks to additional funding from Washington State’s Recreation and Conservation Office, we are restoring 6 acres of blackberry brush to native forest at our Filucy Bay Preserve on the Key Peninsula. In July, GPC contracted Center for Natural Lands Management (CNLM) to mow dense blackberry stands spanning 6 acres to create access for a cultural resources assessment. The mowed blackberry will undergo two additional rounds of treatment, and in January 2024, Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) crew members will plant 2,400 native plants to restore a climate resilient forest ecosystem! |

Join us on Thursday, August 24th from 10-12pm at Curley Creek Tyner Preserve for a Walk and Talk focused on benthic sampling and community science. Learn more and sign up below! |

 | During the next several months, Great Peninsula Conservancy will be assisting the Clear Creek Task Force in recruiting more volunteers and forming a new leadership team. All are welcome to join this upcoming meeting to start the process; no RSVP required. The next meeting is on Thursday Steptember 7th, 5:30-7pm. Join at the Clear Creek Sa’qad Interpretive Center or via Zoom. The Task Force meets the first Thursday of the month. |

| | Washington Conservation Corps (WCC) is currently accepting applications for 11-month AmeriCorps members. WCC is an excellent way to get experience in the conservation world and could be a jumping off point for a land trust career. |
| | | Help Washington Sea Grant keep an eye out for invasive green crabs by participating in "Molt Search", an early detection community science program designed to help managers direct resources to under-searched or green crab detected beaches. It's a systematic beach walk, where you spend 20 minutes collecting and identifying all crab molts you find and submit that information via the MyCoast app. |
| | | Kitsap County Parks is seeking community input on their Parks, Recreation, and Open Space (PROS) Plan, which will serve as the implementation guide and strategic plan for managing and enhancing the County's park and recreation services. Learn more and take the survey below. |
| | | The Russell Family Foundation is recruiting for the 2024 class of the Jane’s Fellowship Program (JFP). This year-long program brings together a diverse group of leaders who are actively serving Pierce County and working to address community challenges. Applications are due Tuesday, September 19, 2023. |
